Equinor and partners collaborate on Germany’s first large-scale offshore hydrogen park

Equinor and its partners RWE, Shell and Gasunie are planning to ramp up their collaboration on what will be Germany’s first large-scale offshore hydrogen park.

The AquaSector project aims to demonstrate that in Germany, offshore-based hydrogen production enables an efficient, cost-effective and sustainable way to produce green hydrogen.

The project intends to install 300 megawatts of electrolyzer capacity to produce up to 20,000 tons per year of green hydrogen offshore. The green hydrogen is planned to be transported via a pipeline, called AquaDuctus, to Heligoland beginning in 2028.

The partners see the AquaSector project as a “proof of concept” for the realization of a plan to produce up to 10 gigawatts of green hydrogen offshore by 2035, and transport it via an extended pipeline to mainland Germany. The pipeline could replace the construction of five High Voltage Direct Current (HVDC) transmission systems and is by far the most cost-effective option for
