The Isle of Wight, the largest and second-most populous island of England, is moving ahead with its Perpetuus Tidal Energy Centre (PTEC) scheme.
The council has been permitted to advance on the next steps for the onshore parts of the project, which include a substation, control room, and cable installation, according to news reports.
The scheme already has obtained permission for its offshore equipment, with construction to begin in 2023 and the project scheduled to be operational by 2025, according to Isle of Wight County Press.
PTEC eventually could provide clean energy for as many as 15,700 homes, equivalent to more than 20 percent of the island's housing.
