Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (DEWA) has signed a Water Purchase Agreement (WPA) as well as the Shareholder Agreement (SHA) for the 120 million-gallon-per-day (MIGD) Hassyan Sea Water Reverse Osmosis (SWRO) Plant, according to Utilities Middle East.

The 35-year WPA was signed with Utico, the largest private utility provider in the United Arab Emirates.

The SWRO Plant project is expected to be completed by March 2024 at a cost of $408.30 million, according to InfraPPP.

“This key project supports DEWA’s strategy to engage the private sector in developing innovations that enhance water supplies and improve the efficiency and quality of water services,” said Al Tayer, managing director and CEO of DEWA.

DEWA said it is working to increase the production capacity of desalinated water to 750 MIGD, compared with the current 470 MIGD. The company aims to produce 100 percent of desalinated water, using a mix of clean energy and waste
