DOE and World Bank Group explore offshore wind development in the Philippines

The Philippines Department of Energy (DOE) and the World Bank Group (WBG) have launched a new project to identify areas with high potential for offshore wind development in the Philippines.

Dubbed the Philippine Offshore Wind Roadmap project, the undertaking will seek to establish short- and long-term offshore wind targets, formulate strategies to successfully integrate offshore wind in the government’s renewable energy (RE) portfolio, and recommend policies to help foster a conducive business environment for offshore wind investors.

The project’s launch was attended virtually by energy industry stakeholders, RE developers, investors, wind turbine manufacturers and suppliers, as well as representatives from other government agencies.

Mark Leybourne, co-lead of the WBG Offshore Wind Development Program, says early estimates indicate the Philippines has more than 170 gigawatts of offshore wind potential.
