Digital Realty to expand renewable energy solutions in several states

by Kali Persall

Digital Realty has plans to expand its renewable energy and sustainability offerings in Northern Virginia and Oregon, the data center company announced Oct. 2.

Digital Realty signed a long-term power-purchase agreement with ENGIE North America to supply an additional 107,000 megawatt-hours of renewable solar power annually to its Northern Virginia portfolio. The 50-megawatt project will bring the company's total new wind and solar power under contract to 338 megawatts and is expected to come online in late 2020.

The company also signed a utility green tariff with Portland General Electric (PGE) to supply 120,000 megawatt-hours annually in renewable power to its data center development project in Hillsboro, Ore.

Digital Realty said the agreements will add 227,000 megawatt hours of new clean energy to the regional electric grids where Digital Realty operates, enough electricity to meet the needs of 27,900 homes for a year.

“We are pleased to be able to help our customers meet their renewable energy goals by bringing additional renewables to Virginia and supporting an innovative new renewable energy tariff offered by PGE in Oregon,” said William Stein, CEO of Digital Realty.

Aaron Binkley, senior director of sustainability added, “We place a high priority on sourcing net-new renewable energy as we expand our portfolio, and each market has its own unique pathway to identifying and realizing impactful and cost-effective renewable solutions.”

Digital Realty has procured 100 percent renewable energy for its EMEA portfolio, 100 percent wind power for its U.S. co-location business unit and 100 percent carbon-free and renewable power for several properties in Northern California.
