Tennessee has $55b infrastructure deficit, report finds

by Kali Persall

Tennessee's infrastructure is better than most states, by some accounts. However, according to a new report from the Tennessee Advisory Commission on Intergovernmental Relations, the state is still lacking $54.8 billion for infrastructure improvements.

This is the fourth consecutive year that number has risen, according to the Associated Press. The state saw a 9.7 percent increase from last year, when that figure was only $4.8 billion.

The state’s most expensive infrastructure needs are in the transportation and utilities sectors, with $29.6 billion needed for projects that should be in the development stage from July 2018 to June 2023.

According to the report, funding for two-thirds of the estimated costs of needed improvements were unavailable at the time the study was conducted.
