Trans-Pacific container ports are doing better than expected moving into 2021, according to an article by FreightWaves.
Container volumes that were expected to peak in October are still going strong with no letup in sight, and East and Gulf coast ports have now seen volume gains that rival ports in California. At this point, based on previous year patterns, analysts are predicting this to last until March, following the Chinese New Year holiday in February.
Over the past three months, U.S. ports were up 18.7 percent year-over-year; the highest figure it has been in at least a decade, according to FreightWaves.
Predicting the time of the letup is difficult and depends on when U.S. consumers shift their spending back toward services such as travel, restaurants and bars at the expense of goods, SeaIntelligence Consulting CEO Lars Jensen told FreightWaves.
