Construction has started on the first phase of the $2.1 billion South Terminal at Orlando International Airport in Orlando, Fla.
The first phase of its expansion is scheduled for completion in 2020. The new terminal is a result of the ever-increasing amount of travelers passing through the airport. Orlando International is currently designed to comfortably handle 24 million passengers per year.
The first phase of the new terminal will include an addition of 16 gates, which will allow the airport to handle 50 million passengers. .
The $2.1 billion project will include 120 total gates.
Other airports across the nation are under construction to accommodate similar passenger growth.
In Salt Lake City, the airport is undergoing a $3 billion new terminal and related facilities with completion set for 2020.
In Florida, Tampa International is undergoing a $1 billion expansion of its main terminal, rental-car space and automated-shuttle capacity.
The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey (PATH) plans to spend more than $1 billion on major redevelopment projects at John F. Kennedy International Airport (JFK), Newark Liberty International Airport (EWR) and LaGuardia Airport (LGA).
