Clark County approves parking plan for sphere arena

by Andrea Zander

The Madison Square Garden Co. (MSG) and the Las Vegas Sands Corp. have plans to build a 360-foot-tall, 500-foot-wide, 18,000-seat spherical arena on the Las Vegas Strip.

It will be built behind the Venetian and Palazzo.

Construction has not begun; however, Clark County commissioners have approved the arena’s parking plan, according to local media outlets.

Representatives from Madison Square Garden, the company building the arena, told commissioners they plan to build a pedestrian walkway from the Sands Convention Center to the MSG Sphere and a monorail stop near the venue.

Construction on the arena is expected to start this year, and the project is slated for completion in 2020.

Also scheduled for a 2020 opening is The Drew Las Vegas, a $2.5 billion resort hotel located on the Strip, and the 65,000-seat NFL Raiders’ stadium.

In January 2018, Clark County commissioners signed off on a key agreement with the Raiders to build their stadium. In the agreement, the owners of the Raiders will pay for the improvement of infrastructure and public safety at and around the $1.9 billion stadium, of which $750 million is publicly funded.

The improvements include widening sidewalks, improving existing roadways and likely building a pedestrian bridge over Interstate 15 linking the stadium to Mandalay Bay. The Raiders would own any bridges they pay for.

And Henderson mayor Debra March approved the sale of 55 acres for the Raiders to build a practice facility and corporate offices.
