CityFibre, the largest alternative provider of wholesale fiber network infrastructure in the United Kingdom, has broken ground on a full fiber network for Renfrewshire Council in Scotland.
CityFibre is pouring £40 million ($51 million) into the deal via a private investment.
As part of the deal, CityFibre’s existing network will be extended by approximately 700 kilometers (435 miles) and cover the towns of Paisley, Renfrew and Johnstone. The first homes and businesses are expected to be able to connect to the network from early 2021.
“The coronavirus pandemic has underlined how much we all need fast, reliable broadband connections, and demand for better bandwidth continues to grow year-on-year so it’s vitally important for our businesses, for our schools and for our residents that we have a resilient, future-proofed network to be proud of,” said Iain Nicolson, Renfrewshire council leader.
