Cities around the world are failing to capitalize on the potential of smart environmental opportunities, a new report by the U.K.-based Environmental Industries Commission’s (EIC) has revealed.
The report, titled Strategy to reality: Getting smart cities to deliver for the environment, found that cities that set 2020 emissions targets through the Carbon Disclosure Project are on average still 47 percent short of meeting them.
Research also shows a disconnect between cities’ environmental policies and their smart city strategies. While all of the 12 cities analyzed had comprehensive environmental strategies relating to air quality, waste, water, carbon, green travel and green infrastructure, cities only had on average one other smart environmental initiative.
