CIMIC secures three coal mine construction projects in Indonesia

by Jody Barhanovich

CIMIC Group’s global mining services provider Thiess has secured three coal mine construction projects in South Kalimantan, Indonesia.

The first project is a $150 million contract extension to provide mine services at Arutmin’s Senakin coal mine. The two-and-a-half-year contract extension will see Thiess continue to provide coal mining services across the Arutmin-owned, CLS-managed project, including overburden removal, coal handling and preparation works.

The second project is a three-year, $280 million contract extension at the Wahana coal mine. Thiess will continue to provide coal mining services, including overburden removal, pit dewatering and coal hauling to port at Wahana, which is owned by Bayan Resources. During the contract term, the Thiess project team will mine approximately 6 million tons of coal and 74 million bank cubic meters (bcm) of overburden.

The third project is a $240 million contract extension at the Satui coal mine. At the Arutmin-owned, CLS-managed project, Thiess will continue to provide mining services at the project’s Hanoman West pit. This includes overburden removal, coal mining and port operation support services over three years. The contract involves mining approximately 7 million tons of coal and 83 million bank cubic meters (bcm) of overburden.
