by Kali Persall

CPB Contractors, a CIMIC Group company, has been awarded a design and construct contract for Stage 2 of the A$761 million ($514 million) Monash Freeway upgrade in Melbourne, Australia.

The project is being funded by the Australian and Victorian Governments.

“CIMIC Group’s construction company, CPB Contractors, has a demonstrated capability of delivering infrastructure in Victoria and beyond,” said Michael Wright, CEO of CIMIC Group. “The upgrade of the Monash Freeway will improve the lives of many people, saving time and better connecting communities to important employment centers.”

The construction will add 36 kilometers (22 miles) of new lanes to the Monash Freeway, and include upgrading the Beaconsfield interchange with new freeway ramps, extending and widening O’Shea Road, and rolling out the Freeway Lane Management System to better manage traffic flows.

Construction is scheduled to start in early 2020 and be completed in 2022.

“Our absolute priority is the safety of our people and all road users,” said Juan Santamaria, managing director of CPB Contractors. “We will be applying our experience, built over many decades, to safely deliver this upgrade in a live traffic environment.”
