Chilean President Sebastian Pinera is planning to funnel $1.4 billion into upgrading airports across the country.
The project would modernize 17 airport networks, increasing capacity from 214,000 square meters (2.3 million square feet) to 537,000 square meters (6 million square feet) of terminals, in order to meet demand projected over the next 20 years.
The airport modernization plan also would include the bidding of five airports administered by the Directorate General for Civil Aviation in France, and one administered by the Navy. In addition, the plan would add nine airports to the existing six that offer international operation services, and reduce boarding fees by 10 percent for domestic flights.
