A case for specialized funds

As the private infrastructure market matures, investment funds are starting to become more targeted, shifting from a generalist strategy to a specialized approach.

As funds diversify, the market is seeing a growing number of specialized fund managers entering the space. Jamie Storrow, managing director and co-head of infrastructure at Northleaf Capital Partners, says specialization of funds is manifesting in a number of ways, such as geography, risk appetite, subsector, stage of development and size, among other characteristics.

“A specialist manager in the current market might focus solely on communications infrastructure in the U.S.; they might focus on greenfield investing in emerging markets or they might invest in a very low-risk asset below a certain size,” said Storrow. “These are specializations were seeing across a number of criteria and as the industry matures, we should expect to see an increasing amount of specialization as well.”
