The government of Canada has entered into a public private partnership with Innovate Energy to fund a C$2.6 billion ($2 billion) clean power project in the National Capital Region of Canada.
Innovate Energy will upgrade heating and cooling plants from a steam system to electric. The project is expected to reduce carbon pollution by 63 percent, save hundreds of millions of dollars, and improve safety conditions.
The project will be divided into two phases and will take place over a period of 35 years. The first phase will include the C$1.1 billion ($829 million) design and construction of the new system, scheduled for completion by 2025. Phase two, valued at C$1.5 billion ($1.1 billion) includes ongoing operation and maintenance from 2020 to 2055.
“We are working hard to make Ottawa the greenest capital city with investments in LRT, cycling infrastructure, active transportation, and a healthier Ottawa River,” said Carla Qualtrough, minister of public services and procurement and accessibility, in a statement. “We are setting the standard for how communities can become greener and more resilient in the face of climate change.”
