California Utilities to exceed state renewable energy goals

by Andrea Waitrovich

The California Public Utilities Commission (CPUC) has released its annual Renewables Portfolio Standard (RPS) report showing that the program is ahead of target by 10 years.

In 2015 Governor Jerry Brown signed a law ordering California to get 50 percent of its electricity from renewable sources by 2030. At the time, California ranked as the nation’s third-largest oil producing state, behind Texas and North Dakota.

The state’s three large investor-owned utilities surpassed interim targets of 25 percent in 2016:

  • Pacific Gas and Electric Co.: 32.9 percent
  • Southern California Edison: 28.2 percent
  • San Diego Gas and Electric: 43.2 percent

In addition, the large IOUs forecast they will meet or exceed their 2020 RPS compliance period requirements, and meet the 2030 50 percent RPS requirement by 2020.
