The Canada Infrastructure Bank (CIB) and Government of Alberta’s Ministry of Transportation have signed a memorandum of understanding for a 13-kilometer (8-mile) rail project that would link downtown Calgary and Banff National Park, according to InfraPPP.
The Calgary-Banff Rail project would consist of a dedicated line built within the existing Canadian Pacific Railway’s corridor and include six potential stops, including Calgary International Airport, Downtown Calgary, Cochrane, Morley, Canmore and Banff.
The goal of the project is to ease congestion in the region of Banff National Park.
A report conducted by the Town of Banff municipality in 2019 estimated the railway’s construction costs at between $C660 million and C$680 million ($485 million and $500 million), according to International Railway Journal.
Under the memorandum of understanding, CIB and the Government of Alberta will conduct feasibility studies for the project.
