BW ESS and MIRAI Power to co-develop BESS in Southern Germany

Global energy storage owner-operator BW ESS and Munich-based energy storage developer MIRAI Power have signed a joint development agreement, setting out plans to co-develop up to 1-gigawatt of energy storage projects in Southern Germany.

Germany is rising to prominence as a growth hotspot for large-scale battery energy-storage systems (BESS) in Europe, as the power market seeks to effectively integrate large volumes of renewable-energy capacity, while managing negative pricing and curtailment risks. Germany is both Europe’s largest power market and its most liquid one. About 7-gigawatt-hours of new storage is expected to be added by 2026 — a five-fold increase in capacity.
