Building portfolios in the fragmented European self-storage sector is hard work — Is it worth the trouble?

“I’ve been in self-storage since 1995,” says Russell Jordan, managing director of Space Plus. “And I’ve got to say, I’ve never seen the market as buoyant or as appetising. You’re now seeing larger pension funds and insurance companies trying to get a foothold into the sector.”

Jordan says that the COVID-19 crisis has played a significant part in driving recent interest. Although self-storage has usually performed well during financial downturns, this tendency has come to the fore over the last two years, as self-storage company trading figures have caught the eye of general equity investors.
