British construction company Laing O’Rourke has been awarded to build the “Central Walk” for Sydney’s Central station at a cost of A$955 million ($747 million).
The contract involves construction of the new platforms, 89 feet below the existing platform level, together with the new pedestrian concourse Central Walk, which will connect the new metro platforms to Chalmers Street.
The station is a key target within the A$20 billion ($16 billion) Sydney Metro project, Australia’s biggest public transport infrastructure project.
More than 250,000 people pass through Central Station every day and that number is expected to grow to 450,000 in the next two decades.
When completed in 2024, the new line will help 100,000 extra daily commuters get across Sydney, and the number of train services will increase from about 120 an hour to 200 an hour.
Laing O’Rourke will work alongside global architecture firm Woods Bagot and its partner John McAslan + Partners, and with designers GHD and Aurecon.
