Brazilian transportation agency approves BRL2.72b railway concession contract

The Brazillian Agência Nacional de Transportes Terrestres (ANTT) and the consortium of Rumo Logística have signed the Norte-Sul railway concession contract for a BRL2.72 billion ($692 million) railway project, according to InfraPPP.

The railway project spans 1,537 kilometers (955 miles) from Porto Nacional (TO) to Estrela d’Oeste (SP). It will pass through the states of São Paulo, Minas Gerais, Goiás, and Tocantins and transport up to 22.73 million tons of cargo from the midwest to the ports of Itaqui and Santos by the end of the concession period in 2049.

It is estimated to transport 1.7 million tons of cargo by 2020.

According to InfraPPP, the central branch is fully completed and operational, with services expected to take place until the end of 2019, while the southern section is 95 percent complete.

The concessionaire has two years to complete interventions and start operations in 2021.
