Bell Canada backs fiber rollout in Ontario city with C$400m commitment

Bell Canada has agreed to invest C$400 million ($305 million) to expand broadband and internet access in urban and rural areas of Hamilton, Ontario, in what has been called the “largest digital infrastructure investment in the city’s history.”

As part of the plan to adapt gaps in digital infrastructure across the city, Hamilton’s Mayor Fred Eisenberger ordered an increase in broadband speeds for business parks, major commercial areas and rural areas in the community, according to a statement by Bell.

Bell is expected to bring direct fiber network connections to more than 200,000 homes and business locations throughout the city, offering data speeds up to 1.5 gigabits per second. The majority of the network build will consist of new fiber installed underground, with additional fiber located on Bell, Hydro One and Alectra Utilities poles.
