Intermodal Terminal Company (ITC), which was launched in December 2022 and is backed by one of Australia’s major super funds, Aware Super, has plans to build and operate a $400 million intermodal terminal in Melbourne.
The Somerton Intermodal Terminal (SIT), located in Melbourne’s north, will be Australia’s largest intermodal terminal and the first in a network of independently owned and operated terminals planned across the country.
At capacity, SIT each year is expected to process more than 1 million 20-foot equivalent units (TEUs) and remove 500,000 truck trips from inner-Melbourne’s roads. It also is expected to save 451 million liters of fuel each year and reduce carbon emissions by 189,000 tonnes.
Once completed in 2025, the project is expected to provide the most cost-effective, Melbourne-based bookend solution for the $14.5 billion Inland Rail project, which now has no endpoint in Melbourne and no viable terminal solution, in time for its schedul
