Asia is on track to dominate the wind energy market in the coming decades, according to a new report by the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA).
Installed capacity for onshore wind could grow from 230 gigawatts in 2018 to 2,600 gigawatts by 2050, accounting for more than 50 percent of all onshore and more than 60 percent offshore wind capacity installed globally.
North America would follow, accounting for 23 percent of onshore wind power installations and Europe with 10 percent. For offshore, Europe would follow Asia with 22 percent and North America with 16 percent.
According to Francesco La Camera, director-general at IRENA, wind energy could be the largest single source of power generation by mid-century.
“Our roadmap for a global energy transformation to 2050 shows that it is technically and economically feasible to ensure a climate-safe, sustainable energy future,” said La Camera. “Unlocking global wind energy poten
