Northern Rail, which stretches 190 miles from Northumberland to Nottinghamshire, England, and carries 101 million passengers a year, will be renationalized, public ownership, to ensure the service continues to operate.
It was operated by Deutsche Bahn-owned Arriva, which has operated the franchise since 2016.
Recently, customers faced a 2.7 percent increase in fares due to the poor performance by the operator. Other issues include a timetable that was issued in May 2018, which created frustrated commuters because it resulted in widespread delays and cancellations. And stalled infrastructure investment and disputes with rail workers’ unions have also added to its woes.
The formal renationalization will be ordered by Transport Secretary Grant Shapps, who described the private ownership’s delivery as “completely unacceptable.”
