More Americans move to urban areas

According to the United Nations, more than half of the world’s population already lives in urban areas today, and the organization predicts that this percentage will rise to 68 percent by 2050.

More than one-third of Americans (65 percent) are not satisfied with public and private investment in affordable housing, underscoring increasing angst over the rising cost of rent in major U.S. cities, according to Nuveen Real Estate’s urbanization report, which surveyed 1,000 people on their attitudes toward urbanization.

Not only are an increasing number of Americans flocking toward cities, but more residents are living in urban dwellings, putting pressure on cities and states to make housing more affordable and affirming a truism that commercial real estate investors have long understood: cities and urban areas are a lucrative area to invest.
