Amazon names top 20 cities as finalists for new HQ

by Jody Barhanovich

Amazon, the Seattle-based tech company, has announced its list of 20 cities that are finalists in the running to host its second headquarters (HQ2) in North America.

The final 20 cities include:

  • Atlanta
  • Austin
  • Boston
  • Chicago
  • Columbus, OH
  • Dallas
  • Denver
  • Indianapolis
  • Los Angeles
  • Miami
  • Montgomery County, MD
  • Nashville
  • New York
  • Newark
  • Northern Virginia
  • Pittsburgh
  • Philadelphia
  • Raleigh, NC
  • Toronto
  • Washington, D.C.

Notably, many West Coast cities were not included in the list due to the fact that Amazon’s mission is to build a second headquarters some distance away from Seattle.

Amazon selected its top 20 candidates from more than 238 applications from cities across Mexico, Canada and the United States. The company announced that it was building HQ2 in September 2017 and started accepting proposals directly after.

The company expects to invest more than $5 billion in construction of its second headquarters and grow it to include as many as 50,000 high-paying jobs. In addition to Amazon’s direct hiring and investment, construction and ongoing operation of Amazon HQ2 is expected to create tens of thousands of additional jobs and tens of billions of dollars in additional investment in the surrounding community.

The final site selection is expected to be announced sometime this year.
