Amazon.com Inc. is planning a major investment in 26 new wind and solar utility projects around the globe, making it the largest corporate buyer of renewable energy, according to Bloomberg.
The utility-scale projects are located in Australia, France, Germany, Italy, South Africa, Sweden, the United Kingdom and the United States, and together will have the capacity to produce 3.4 gigawatts of electricity. Amazon did not elaborate on the cost of its latest renewable push.
“Amazon is helping fight climate change by moving quickly to power our businesses with renewable energy,” said Jeff Bezos, CEO of Amazon, in a statement.
Amazon is planning to power its operations with renewable energy sources by 2025 and to become carbon neutral by 2040.
Including the new deals, Amazon has backed 127 wind and solar projects, representing 6.5 gigawatts of capacity.
