The Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank (AIIB) has allotted $100 million to help strengthen health infrastructure in Uzbekistan and enhance resilience to future public health disasters.
The project aims to bolster Uzbekistan’s healthcare sector by strengthening the national laboratory system and enhancing the testing capacity of 38 healthcare facilities, establishing a national surveillance system that will introduce a digital platform to identify potential COVID-19 cases, and upgrading 16 COVID-19 treatment centers.
“Addressing emergency healthcare needs to combat COVID-19 and prevent its spread is the immediate priority,” said Supee Teravaninthorn, director general, investment operations at AIIB. “The financing will support Uzbekistan’s response to the current pandemic and capacity building to effectively manage future outbreaks.”
The project will be co-funded by the AIIB Crisis Recovery Facility — which provides up to $13 billion of financing t
