AES bolsters renewables and energy storage portfolio with PPAs

The AES Corp. signed 3 gigawatts of new power-purchase agreements (PPA) for renewables and energy storage in 2020, according to a Feb. 25 statement from the company.

The company’s backlog now totals 6.9 gigawatts and includes 1.85 gigawatts under construction and 5.1 gigawatts signed under long-term PPAs. AES said it is also developing and deploying solutions such as battery-based energy storage, digital customer interfaces and energy management.

In 2020, the company completed the construction of 2.3 gigawatts of new projects and signed 3 gigawatts of renewables and energy storage under long-term PPAs. AES also retired or sold 4.5 gigawatts of coal generation, which is now 25 percent of the company’s total generation on a pro forma basis.
