4.7% return generated by Columbia University endowment during fiscal year

by Lewis Dayton

Columbia University’s endowment, managed by Columbia University Investment Management Company (Columbia IMC), yielded a 4.7 percent return for the fiscal year that ended on June 30.

Over the past 10 years, the university has generated annualized returns of 8 percent.

“The Columbia investment portfolio benefitted from strong public markets performance in the United States in fiscal 2023 and was also bolstered by hedge fund outperformance relative to benchmarks,” said Kim Lew, president and CEO at Columbia IMC. “While our private assets portfolio was modestly negative in aggregate this past year, we believe that private markets continue to offer investment opportunities at favorable valuations in segments that will outperform over the next market cycle.”

Of the endowment’s $13.6 billion of assets under management, $911 million is allocated toward institutional real estate.
