REIT industry pioneer Michael T. Oliver passes away

by Zoë Wolff

Just 10 days shy of his 50th wedding anniversary and a few weeks from his 73rd birthday, Michael T. Oliver lost his battle with cancer March 9.

Oliver co-founded PRA Securities Advisors, now Heitman Real Estate Securities. According to REIT Zone, Oliver convinced the Oregon Public Employees Retirement Fund to get into REITs as one of the early institutional investors in the REIT market. After leaving Heitman, Oliver moved to Alaska, where he joined the Alaska State Pension Investment Board. While with ASPIB, Oliver served as the State Investment Officer responsible for real estate, agriculture, energy, hedge funds and private equity investments. During his time in Alaska, he also was a contributor and member of Institutional Real Estate, Inc.’s editorial advisory board. Oliver most recently was director of new business development at Concierge Asset Management.

Oliver is survived by his wife, three children and eight grandchildren. The family will be holding a memorial service on March 19 and asks that in lieu of flowers, donations be made to Seattle’s Virginia Mason Hospital’s Fund for Excellence.
