Apple invests €1.7b in European data centers

Apple has plans to invest €1.7 billion ($1.93 billion) in two new data centers that will be built in Europe. The investment is Apple’s biggest project in Europe to date.

Located in County Galway, Ireland, and central Jutland, Denmark, both will be powered by 100 percent renewable energy. The new facilities will power a number of Apple’s online services for customers across Europe.

Each data center measures approximately 1.79 million square feet and is expected to begin operations in 2017. The investment is set to be evenly divided between Athenry in Ireland and Viborg in Denmark, with the Irish government confirming that €850 million ($962.71 million) would be spent in Ireland.
